Design notes

Shape of the page
One list, the full width of the page, and a footer that states how many orders are in it.
What it leads with
The orders. A row is an order with a status, so the first cell carries the customer and what is in the box rather than just a number.
Spacing
Shopify's defaults, unchanged. This page compresses nothing, because a merchant reads it on a phone as often as on a laptop.
The one bold decision
Selecting rows swaps the filter bar for the bulk actions bar in the same place, so nothing on the page moves. Cancelling orders asks the merchant to type a phrase, and the button that does it is not there until the phrase matches.
Where the colour comes from
Every colour, corner and spacing step is Shopify's own published Polaris set, taken from the system rather than sampled by eye.
Readability, measured
Body text on a card: 13.20:1. White on the cancel button, inside the confirmation: 5.81:1. The warning text on the bulk actions bar: 9.46:1. Higher is easier to read, and 4.5 is the accessibility floor. Every pair Polaris requires clears it.
Light only
Shopify ships one finished theme. Its dark one is still in progress, and several of its colours are the light values sitting on a dark surface, which measure nearer 1.4 than the floor of 4.5. So this page asks for the light theme even on a computer set to dark, because that is the one that is readable.
