Cinder Fenwick cluster · Portfolio

Sixty-one of sixty-four accelerators are working.

Eleven jobs running, nine queued. One of the nine cannot be placed on this cluster as it is written.

Job 4471 will never start

It asks for sixteen accelerators on a single node. The largest node on this cluster has eight, so no arrangement of the queue can place it. It has waited three hours and will keep waiting.

Design notes

Shape of the page
A black chapter over a white one, which is how this language gets its air — the alternation does the work that padding does elsewhere. The chapter carries the cluster’s state, and the queue is the explanation for it.
What it leads with
How much of the machine is working. A research cluster is bought once and judged on utilisation, so the count of accelerators in use is the first thing on the screen and the queue is the explanation for it.
Spacing
Sections butt against each other at one rhythm with no divider between them, and nothing on the page carries a shadow. A card is a hairline rectangle with a small square anchored to its corner, which is this system’s own way of saying a thing is a card.
The one bold decision
The job that can never run is separated from the jobs that are merely waiting. Every queue reports both as pending, which is true and useless: one of them starts tonight and the other will still be there on Friday. This job asks for sixteen accelerators on one node and the largest node has eight, so the screen says that, says what would make it run, and puts the control to change it beside the sentence.
Where the colour comes from
One green, spent only where the system permits it: the primary action, the active section, the corner square and the wordmark. Hierarchy is two weights and a size, never a tint — body text is the same colour whatever it is saying. The one exception the system makes is an inline link, which is a blue on the white canvas and the green on the black one, and both are used here exactly there.
Measured
On the white canvas: body text 17.40:1, the quietest text 6.05:1 in the recessed band, a control outline 3.27:1. On the black one: body text 8.73:1 on a lifted panel, the quietest text 4.98:1, a control outline 3.78:1. The label on the green action reads 8.71:1 — this green takes black text, and white on it would reach only 2.4:1.
Two modes, read as a preference
The black and the white are two chapters of one page in the reference, alternating down it. Here they are a choice, because a queue is watched for a whole shift by somebody who gets to decide. The values are the reference’s; reading them as a preference is this page’s own decision.
Where the type comes from
One family at two weights, no serif and no monospace, exactly as the reference sets it. Figures are set with fixed-width digits so a column of elapsed times lines up, which is the one typographic thing a queue needs and a brand site never does.
